Inspiring Floral Trends for Weddings, Galas, and More
Just like fashion and design follow trends, so do florals for celebrations such as weddings and galas. This becomes clear when you look at weddings in the ‘50s or ‘70s compared to the designs of today. Since then, a lot has changed!
Our designers at Regina Gust Designs keep close track of floral trends and designs so that we can continue to offer our clients unique and tailored decorations for their celebrations. Here’s what you need to know!
Trends in Arrangements
Starting with wedding bouquets that used to be large and voluminous, right now the trend is simplicity – a few flowers, a single stem. Even though these bouquets are smaller, they still pack a punch with texture and color. Choices today increasingly include organic flower arrangements, hand-picked flowers, and naturally shaped blooms. Ultimately, this is a trend that moves away from artificial looks towards natural beauty.
Greenery
Another trend that is rapidly gaining in popularity is the use of greenery in flower arrangements. Whereas greens were formerly used as filler material, they now are center stage in stunning arrangements that make one think of harvests, forests, and sprawling lands. Environmentally more sustainable and organic, greenery is also appreciated for its longevity and ability to provide visual richness at a lower environmental cost.
Monofloral Arrangements
Stepping away from the bright and diverse colors and harmonies, monofloral arrangements are becoming more and more the trend. Whether displayed as curtains of lilies or baby’s breath or as a simple white bouquet on a white wedding dress, monofloral arrangements promote the power of simplicity with often stunning results.
Aisles and Arches
Often taking second place in wedding arrangements, aisles and arches are becoming more and more the trend for today’s wedding ceremonies. Instead of overhead frames and boughs, arches can be found more often on the ground in front of the bride and groom, encircling the ceremony with a magic touch.
Trending toward organic shapes and natural looks with wispy wildflowers and grasses, aisles and arches are becoming freer in form and expression. Or, as one designer put it: “Meadow-style ground arches with full aisle decor are becoming increasingly popular, creating a soft, romantic atmosphere.”
Sculptured Centerpieces
Rather than the classic centerpieces that have been so popular over the past years, the new trend lies in sculpted flower arrangements with large floral installations. These are taking center stage at galas and creating interesting focal points and conversation starters. You can expect sophisticated contours and sculpted layers paired with textural wildflowers. For example, Queen Anne’s lace and chamomile with calla lilies, hydrangea, and amaranthus.
Monochromatic Decorations
Another upcoming trend in centerpieces includes minimalist arrangements showing clean lines and monochromatic palettes, creating an atmosphere of elegance and simplicity. Delicate flowers combined with exotic blooms create tasteful and interesting tablescapes that have a very different look and feel than what guests are traditionally accustomed to.
Trends in Flower Types
While a variety of flowers remain still very much in style for weddings and galas, a new, emerging trend is one-flower compositions to create an impactful moment either as a centerpiece or a bridal bouquet. Designed in a loose, flowing manner rather than a rigid setup, one-flower arrangements can be stunning and far more impactful than traditional arrangements.
Bright colors aren’t necessarily a new trend when it comes to wedding flowers, but unexpected shades and combinations are emerging in popularity. New colors and varieties in roses, carnations, lisianthus, and others can create a palette and combine colors in a way that can be unique for a wedding.
Rather than muted tones, more couples gravitate toward primary colors (yellow, red, and blue) that are impossible to miss or ignore. Overall, trends such as these tend to express flowers and their arrangements into real art. Thus, rising above the usual floral pieces into timeless and lasting beauty.
